Once A Month Grocery Shopping

12happydance

I say once a month grocery shopping but I mean once a month our needs are met.  We do not go out to eat any more.  It was rarely a year ago and now it’s we just don’t do it.  Once a month I grocery shop and it takes some pretty crafty menus and budgeting to even do this successfully.  I try to make sure I budget doctor visits for this pay check too.  We get paid every other week.  One week is for needs and the other the mortgage.  My husband and I call it the beast and money pit.

Anyway, usually I shop on Friday but we did it today this month instead.  I was in shock at the number of people at Walmart but not at the grocery area.  The store was packed and the lines were long (sounds like someone recounting a story huh?), but the shelves were stocked.  When I shop on Fridays there is never enough of anything on the shelves and I usually whine about it and the fact that I have to go to 3 stores to get what I need.

Fact is I not only went to 3 but 4 stores today.  Rite Aid had Diet Coke on sale and since I’m an addict that was a mandatory stop.  Then I went to Walmart and proved to my whiny self that if the shelves are stocked I will still go to 3 stores (or 4 in this case).  Then I went to the butcher shop, who contrary to belief are cheaper than the grocery and/or Walmart and they only sell organic.  However, I was a bit miffed that they were out yes OUT of meat and they are a butcher shop (guess I know where are the people were grocery shopping today lol).

Next stop was the grocer.  This is as close as you will get to a family owned grocer and they run really nice sales.  I’m in shock that it was void of people (except one person I don’t like and if I were a better person I wouldn’t mention it but honestly I can count on one hand the number of people I do not like but she’s there on that list!)  I got out of there pretty cheap.

So I’m doing a happy dance because I the groceries were $100 less than my budget.  Then my husband reminds me I have to go back to the butcher this week to get meat (sigh).

The Off Pay Week

nwcat111

We get paid every other week. The week we don’t we were doing without a lot.  Yes, of course we live paycheck to paycheck but I’m thrilled to have that paycheck.  On the typical pay week I pay our bills and it is always the same old same old and then I would do our monthly grocery shop.  The other pay week is named Mortgage Week in our home which means nothing for anyone.

One of the ways I was able to avoid the poor house on the off week was to buy a Walmart Gift Card.  I started spending a little less on the monthly grocery trip and put it on a gift card.  This allowed my husband on his way home from work to pick up that extra gallon of milk or head of lettuce.  It also allowed us since it is Walmart to have a few extra dollars on hand for a quick pair of shoes, or a medication that needs picked up.

How much to put on the card?  I started with $20 but the card is reloadable so if we didn’t spend all of that $20 I would add more to it.  Sometimes when my husbands check was a bit larger I would put more on the card and this gave us a little bit to work with when times were lean.

Just an idea for those of you in the same boat as my family.

School Lunches

Oh what a pain in the rear it is to make my kids lunches.   I don’t particularly like the kitchen and I really do not like making lunches.  It is redundant and I feel like I’m letting my kids down giving them the same old same old.  Being the grateful person I am I try to just be thankful we have food to include in their lunches.  Right now it isn’t so bad as a lot of it is coming from our garden.

I’ve searched the internet and all kinds of magazines who say use a cookie cutter and make it appetizing to look at.  Who has that kind of time?  Besides I just made a mess when I tried it (yes dear readers I got desperate).  I tried getting different types of jams and that didn’t go over well.  Forget the always on sale grape jelly my kids hate it.  They like strawberry, I like apple, and my husband usually swallows his food whole so doesn’t get a vote.

I’ve tried the old faithfuls egg salad, chicken salad, tuna and ham salads.  Although the kids eat it they complain it makes the bread soggy.  My answer to that was to pack crackers instead *ding*ding*ding* we have a winner.  That is one of their favorites.  The also really like it when I pack a lunch of grapes, cheese, crackers, carrot sticks.

I can tell you that unless you qualify for free lunches or reduced lunches this is the way to go.  Packing is much cheaper and here are some ideas to make it cheaper (yeah coupons too lol)

Buy a bag of chicken legs get a large and I do mean large soup kettle and start them boiling.  I skin mine because I want them less fatty.  After they boil and cool pick the meat off and put it into sandwich sized baggies and freeze all but 1.  Take the chicken stock from the legs boiling and pour into freezer containers or I save the tall ones from the deli and fill them up leaving a bit of room for expansion.  Then I freeze them all for later use.  Use the baggie you have to make chicken salad.

My kids love Veggie Roll Ups.  I take tortillas and spread cream cheese on them, then we add their favorite assortment of veggies and roll them up and cut in 1/2.

I usually include chips or a baggie of baby carrots.  I also include a snack item like a granola bar, cereal bar or Ho Ho 😉

For drinks they can usually pick a bottle of water (we recycle the bottles), juice, kool aid etc.  Drinks are the biggest pain in the behind.  If I send them to school they don’t stay cold and If I freeze them first they usually don’t thaw in time for their lunch.

I have on occasion sent soup and left overs in a Thermos as well and sometimes in this cold Michigan weather that’s a nice change.
