"I'm Not Ready to Make Nice"

Swine Flu Tidbits

After watching our local news, I learned that you now have to take a shower, and wear masks, and suit up for what looks like nuclear warfare … to see pigs. I never thought I’d hear of the sorts. So, who are they protecting? The people, or the pigs?

I’m not even sure what to say after that. Have any of you EVER been within 15 feet of a pig pen? I know that swine flu is serious. I’m not making light of that. However, to dress up in such attire to see pigs makes me laugh. Can you get a visual of the dignified reporter, heels, microphone, camera man, with gear and dress shoes … visiting a pig farm. And what those pretty shoes would step in. But to wash before visiting? And that pigs are being kept under massive locks? It all wows me. If you didn’t wash your hands before  you got a good healthy smell of a pig pen, you’ll scrub down after you have left. It’s not a pretty smell.

It’s been made clear, that you don’t get “swine flu”, H1N1 by eating pork.

Can people catch swine flu from eating pork?

No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.
